Creating New Opportunities
Definition- Using an innovative style of thinking to either make progress on an existing idea, or create something completely new.
Criteria:
-Visionary
-Progressive
-Original
-Energetic
Example- During my freshman year I was involved in PREP, which is a freshman leadership organization, or FLO, that focuses on business. I was a member of the committee of internal affairs, and our duty was to plan the social events for all of PREP. As a business organization, there is a delicate balance between the professional and social aspects of PREP. It became evident last year that many members wanted to have more large-scale social events, to correlate with the numerous professional events we host throughout the year.
As a committee, we contemplated numerous ideas for a new social event to create and host. After a time of deliberation, we decided to plan a semi- formal dance. Not many other “FLO’s” host semi formals, so we thought it would be something to set us apart and give the members an opportunity to dress up, mingle with everyone, and just have a great time. Due to the fact that this was a brand new idea, it was not considered in our budget, but we overcame that obstacle by selling tickets to the attendees in order to cover the costs.
We began the planning process of the dance, which immediately caught my attention. Serving as the class president multiple years in high school, I planned numerous homecoming dances and senior prom, so planning this semi-formal was something I felt comfortable with. I then found the venue that we ended up using, dealt with the liability paperwork, and stayed in contact with the location manager. After devoting so much time to the semi-formal dance, it was something I truly felt passionate about, and I strived to make it the most fun event of the year.
With the help of the rest of the committee, I finalized details for the dance, such as the dj’s music list, food, and decorations. After everything was complete, the dance went on with ease, and everyone had a blast dancing and socializing with one another. I definitely considered it one of the best events of the year.
I believe the key to a successful organization is progress. You cannot continue to grow and develop as a team if ideas, projects, and events are stagnant. I believed we helped develop the social aspect of PREP with the creation of the semi-formal dance. We envisioned that the dance would turn into an annual event held in PREP, and this year it is accounted for in the budget due to the raging success the previous year. Through this event, I’ve learned to never be satisfied with how things are, and to seek progress, whether it is in academics, the organizations I am involved in, or my social life.
